Course Description

This three-day course provides an introduction to how to start, build, and run a successful expert witness practice. It is an intensive, content-rich workshop designed for safety, health, and environmental professionals, including prospective and novice expert witnesses. Students will learn from an experienced faculty in a step-by-step manner how to establish, develop, and ethically manage a successful expert witness practice.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the training, participants will be able to understand the role of expert witnesses in civil litigation, who is considered an expert, and how to properly define their areas of expertise, practice areas, education, and degrees. They will learn how to draft a curriculum vitae appropriate for expert witness work, obtain cases and market their business, avoid ethical problems while maintaining integrity, qualify as an expert, determine whether an attorney requires a report, and understand the Daubert and Frye decisions. Additionally, participants will learn how to draft retention agreements to protect their rights, form defensible opinions, develop testifying skills and techniques sought by attorneys, maintain independence and objectivity, remember ten golden rules while avoiding common mistakes, build a strong professional reputation, and uphold ethical standards.
