Certified Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) Safety Specialist Train the Trainer (CH2STT)

3 Day
intermediate

Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) is known as an insidious killer and goes by several unsavory names: sour gas, meadow gas, stink damp, Devil's Breath, and sulfureated hydrogen. It is a colorless gas that can be routinely found around decaying organic material and in some oil and gas operations. It smells like rotten eggs at extremely low concentrations, but it quickly, though temporarily, kills the sense of smell at higher concentrations. (This property gives a false sense of security to the unsuspecting.) H₂S is a highly hazardous gas that rapidly renders its unfortunate victims unconscious, paralyzes the respiratory system, and then causes death in a matter of just a few minutes. However, you can work safely in H₂S environments if you are properly trained, utilize appropriate engineering precautions, and are equipped with the proper personal protective equipment.

It smells like rotten eggs at extremely low concentrations, but it quickly, though temporarily, kills the sense of smell at higher concentrations. (This property gives a false sense of security to the unsuspecting.)

H₂S is a highly hazardous gas that rapidly renders its unfortunate victims unconscious, paralyzes the respiratory system, and then causes death in a matter of just a few minutes. However, you can work safely in H₂S environments if you are properly trained, utilize appropriate engineering precautions, and are equipped with the proper personal protective equipment.

Learning Objectives

Understand H₂S properties, toxicity levels, exposure limits, and regulatory requirements. Identify high-risk areas and apply effective monitoring, detection, and control measures for H₂S. Deliver structured H₂S safety training using effective instructional, communication, and evaluation methods. Develop, document, and maintain compliant H₂S training programs for field and industrial environments.

Who Should Attend

Safety trainers, instructors, and HSE professionals conducting H₂S training. Oil & gas workers, refinery teams, drilling crews, and maintenance personnel. Supervisors oversee operations where H₂S exposure risks exist. Emergency response and rescue teams working in H₂S-prone facilities.
